Valve Oil

Postby bensimon on Fri Sep 14, 2007 9:42 pm

Whats the best valve oil?

Some people say Al Cass, some say Allison, others use their own concoction. (i met a guy that used a mixture or kero, fish oil, wd40, and sewing machine oil - stunk big time but worked!)

What do you reckon?

I use this stuff that i get in from the USA.
ULTRA-PURE, I have been getting it off ebay, its cheeper than driving to the shops to buy oil and it comes to your front door plus its the best oil that i have ever put on my trumpet.

here is the ebay link - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Ultra-Pure-Trump ... otohosting

Valve Oil

Postby Glen on Sat Sep 15, 2007 7:41 pm

Being an old brassy myself, (sorry concert band players), and a eupho player, valve oil is something I use often. Have found Al Cass to be my pick, however water is a good substitute.

I find that valve oil is valve oil and that's speaking from 40 years experience. These days I usually pinch my valve oil from kids in the school band when they leave the band and leave the oil in their cases..hahaha

I suppose you could use straight petrol, it would work and you could sniff and give yourself a high while you are playing..hahaha

Talking about sniffing....This is a quote from band last night.

"DanJ, stop sniffing your oil"

It may sound lame now, but i was just sniffing different brands of oils and some are really strong in smell like petrol and others have no smell at all.

Talking about valve oil, this is similar I suppose, years ago I used to play horn in the Bankstown Orchestra and we used to have this oboe player sitting in front of us who used to think he was above everyone else.
Anyway, he used to have this glass of water beside him so he could dip his reed in during rehearsals and concerts.
The four horn players sitting behind him used to empty all our slides into his glass of water and he never ever realised what we were doing to him.
Probably wrong, but as I said, he was a w...ker

As I am an Oboe player myself I have to say we are a weird breed! Good trick though. Will have to start collecting spit from Harley's eupho to take to rehearsals to put in water pistols or something.
