Open Trumpet Section

Open Trumpet Section

Postby Jen on Wed Jan 16, 2008 10:37 pm

Heya,
I've entered the Open trumpet section and was wondering if anyone else on this forum has too?
I sure would love to meet some new people and not be by myself on the thursday as my band won't be arriving until thursday night/friday afternoon at the latest.

Do the open solo's have test pieces?

How many pieces do you have to perform?

Heya Ben
Yes of course.
The testpiece is the Arutunian(excuse the spelling) Trumpet concerto and this is the only thing you play.
Im surprised nobody knows about this.

Heya Jen.

Didnt mean to sound so vague! Ive never looked into the open solos. Im more than happy just going along with our band!

Ive tried the Arutunian before! Dont think i got past the first fwe bars though lol. Not sure how to spell it, but i know that there is a J in it!!

So you only play that piece and no others? Makes for a quick contest lol

Haha Ben, Its clear you haven't been to the solos, trumpet section goes on for hours at least, the Arutjunian (sp?) goes for like 19mins or something and if there are about over 20 competitors, well if you can do the maths you'll see what I'm talking about...lol

Did your version have numbers or letters, because the nationals organisers have puta big musical cut in it from letter D to Letter M, any ideas as to where they are talking about???
My version has numbers! :?

Hey Jen,

Isn't it the Open Cornet section that usually goes forever? Are you entering that too? Going on how well you played for us at Keller last year, you should fare pretty well.

Oh, and BTW, I think that spelling is correct 8)

Yes Ben. My son (Mark Smith) is the current Trumpet and Flugel Horn Champion. (He has held the Trumpet title for the last three years).
We as a family are very disappointed that he will not have the chance to defend his title on Trumpet again this year owing to the change of day for the section. Flight and accomodation bookings cannot be changed without a significant penalty, plus extra time off work for him and his accompanist. (We believe he would have created history if he won it for the fourth consecutive time).
He will be competing in the Flugel Section which is being held as originally scheduled.
Bev.
Life wasn't meant to be easy, but you can have some fun along the way.

There is a guy I know from Sutherland Brass who I think is entering the open trumpet and the flugel horn. He is also a solo cornet player in his brass band. Brian McGuiness should also enter on trumpet, he is also very good.

I'm sorry to hear that Bev, It would have been fantastic to hear such a talented and experienced player like Mark!!

Hey Robert, your right its usually the cornet section, I remember 5 or 6 years ago there was like 35 competitors, I really felt sorry for the adjudicator...lol
Unfortunately the Open cornet testpiece is a tad too hard for me this year, plus I've just got a new cornet to get used to and i'm getting some teeth out soon so I may not be in the best shape come nationals, only time will tell I guess.

Thanks Ben for the luck, i'll need it!! :?

Thanks for the kind words!! Yeah Kew came 5th, which was good, could have done better but we didn't have the same players as we did last year. Nationals was good fun overall.
