On the 9th of September, PMHM Senior Concert Band travelled to Penrith for their first ever C grade state competition, and placed first.
The band had spent several months in preparation for this contest including a weekend rehearsal with a guest conductor.
The test piece by Australian composer Brian Hogg was Kelly. This was a musical tribute to Ned Kelly. This was a very challenging piece, which at first glance, looked deceptively simple!
Our own choice for the contest was Jacob De Haan's The Saint and the City which is an awesome piece. This piece was in fact the test piece for 2007 C Grade National Championships.
For our hymn, we chose a very beatiful piece called Salvation is Created.
It was a close contest with PMHM Band winning by only 4 points. Second place winners were the South Pacific Concert Band (who won the hymn section of the contest).
Needless to say, both the MD, Glenn Moore and the band were very happy to have placed first.
Congrats to Glenn and the members of the band, and also to the other bands for competing!
Bit of side trivia - it was in 2005 that the PMHM Senior Concert Band won D Grade state, and in 2003 the band was running pretty close to falling over - a good night had over 10 people at rehearsal.
