Opening NSW Parliament 1997

Postby Hornist on Wed Sep 19, 2007 10:52 am

I'm going to give my identity away in telling this as a lot of people know this story, but I conducted the NSW Police Band through the 90's and in 1997 we were playing out the front of Parliament House in Sydney before the opening of Parliament.
One of the medleys I chose to play was a Hollywood Theme thing and in it was an oboe solo "Send in the Clowns"
Apparantly the press that were standing there picked up on it and broadcast that the Police Band was playing Send in the Clowns for the Parliamentarians.
John Laws who was on the radio at the time heard about it and gave me the "Yay for the Day".
We also played an Ed Wilson medley with Bad Habits in it but they missed that one.
I had a phone call at 11pm from Police Protocol at home asking me if I meant to play that for the Parliamentarians.
I said no, but thinking back and knowing I was getting out in a couple of years I should have said yes.
I have some other great moments like that one which I'll share as time goes on.
