We played An African Symphony as our opener (really big opening brass chords and unrelenting percussion, if you haven't heard it). We then played He Ain't Heavy which was a trumpet solo (played on flugel), A Tribute to Artie Shaw (where I, unfortunately played a slightly average solo. :S Bit of an off day). We then played a vocal version of Colours of The Wind with a singer whose name unfortunately eludes me. And then we finished up with a Daly-Wilson Big Band-esque version of Mercy Mercy Mercy.
Not the most challenging programme for many of us and quite unlike our usual repertoire but the audience seemed to love it. (And so did Bill apparently cos we won).
All the bands played well on the day (I was most impressed, particularly, with H & G who have improved out of sight) and what was most pleasing is that everybody was friendly, welcoming, there was no bitterness or rivalry. Everybody was there to celebrate concert banding and it was really nice to see.
We'll be running the competition for invited bands in September (from memory) again if anyone is interested in popping along to watch SA concert bands battle it out in style. Check out our website at
www.ucb.org.au for dates.
Cheers,
Nicole
